MARCUS WAS STRANGELY disappointed when he put Alexander into a carriage the next morning. There was no need for it. They would see each other again, and soon if Marcus had anything to say about it.

For some reason, knowing that didn’t stop him feeling the disappointment.

Nor did it stop him remembering the sensation of waking up with Alexander draped half over him. It had been so long since he’d woken to anything but an empty bed that for a moment the sensation was disorienting…and then it was just wonderful. Even if he did nearly inhale Alexander’s hair. A treacherous part of himself craved Alexander’s presence there every day, which he was going to ignore. But Alexander was apparently dangerous even in sleep. The very presence of him, pressed against Marcus, all sleep-warmed skin and silky hair, was enough to have Marcus thinking things he shouldn’t.

Marcus had woken at his usual early hour, but Alexander likely wasn’t used to keeping such a schedule. He’d woken slowly when Marcus tried to move from under him and had been utterly befuddled, his green eyes unfocused and only half open, his wavy hair in utter disarray. He’d frowned at Marcus and seemed to search for words. It had been adorable, and he’d wanted nothing more than to snuggle back down under the blankets with him. But he couldn’t. Marcus left him to wake up or bury himself under the pillows while he prepared himself for the day. When he returned, Alexander was properly awake and hunting up the last of his clothing.

Alexander had smiled when he saw Marcus and walked over to him, stretching up and giving him a quick kiss. “You get up altogether too early.”

Then he’d disappeared into the bathing room with a bundle of clothes in his arms.

Marcus had offered breakfast before Alexander left, but he’d declined. He’d kissed Marcus, hard and too brief, before he’d swept out of the house. He’d left Marcus dazed and drifting, trying to figure what to do with himself with the whirlwind that was Alexander gone.

He’d asked for breakfast to be brought to his office, and here he was, still trying to clear his head and focus on his work until the children arrived. Would Alexander have wanted to stay if the children weren’t returning? He’d mentioned Marcus’s morning—and he did have work and the children’s impending arrival—as reasons to go without breakfast, but otherwise, would he have wanted to stay, perhaps had a lazy morning in bed? Would Marcus have let him?

He had no idea.

A knock interrupted his thoughts, and a good thing too. Fia came in at his call, carrying his breakfast tray.

“Thank you,” he said when she set it down on the corner of the desk. She gave no indication she knew of Marcus’s overnight guest, but of course she did. Servants always knew, and in this case, they’d done little to hide Alexander’s presence. It didn’t matter. Marcus employed few servants, all of whom were selected for their discretion and trustworthiness as well as their work ethic.
